On April 28, 2007 the Lynn Police Department, in conjunction with the Massachusetts State Police Governor’s Auto Theft Strike Force, conducted a VIN Etching Day. During the course of day, approximately fifty motor vehicle owners had their vehicle's identification numbers etched on to the window glass . Auto glass etching uses a mild acid that marks your vehicle identification number (VIN) on all of the windows of your vehicle, including Sunroofs and T-tops. The etching takes only 10 to 15 minutes to complete, and this process does not deface the vehicle in any way. VIN Etching makes your vehicle a less attractive target to potential car thieves. In order to erase all traces of your vehicle’s VIN, the thief would have to replace all of your vehicle’s windows. The vehicle owners also received a certificate that may entitle them to as much as 15% off your comprehensive auto insurance. (Please contact your insurance company in order to determine eligibility.)
