Subject:            Officer Involved Shooting

On April 21, 2008, at approximately 10:33 p.m., Lynn Police received multiple calls of a hit and run motor vehicle accident in the area of 96 Maple Street. Initial reports indicated that a vehicle struck a telephone pole, and left the scene. This vehicle, a 2001 Lincoln Town Car, continued traveling on Euclid Avenue, and crashed into a stone wall near Flax Pond. When an officer arrived on scene and approached, the operator drove off down Euclid Avenue towards Broadway. The officer began to follow, but discontinued the pursuit when the vehicle traveled on the wrong side of the road. Additional officers also responded to the area.

A series of collisions followed, and an officer was forced to discharge his department issued firearm. The operator of the vehicle was subsequently transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, and treated for a gunshot wound to the area of his upper torso. This individual, a 36 year-old man, is currently in stable condition.

The incident remains under investigation with detectives assigned to the Lynn Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division, and State Police Detectives assigned to District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett’s Office. At this time, the names of the officer and the individual are not being released. The operator of the vehicle could face several charges, which include assault by means of a dangerous weapon, a motor vehicle.
