Primer on Gangs


 

     The mission of the Gang Unit is to reduce criminal activity by persons identified, or suspected, of being gang members or associates. Priority is given to crimes of violence, weapons possession, drug dealing, and any criminal activity in or around schools.

    Other responsibilities assigned to the Gang Unit include:

  • developing gang intelligence including, but not limited to, information regarding gang leaders, organizational structure, rules, practices, area(s) of criminal activity, methods of recruitment and selection, etc.

  • developing and maintaining working relationships with other law enforcement agencies at the local, state, and federal levels regarding gang activity

  • assisting with the training of department officers, schools, community groups, youth groups, and others on gang activity

  • developing safe and effective strategies for reducing gang membership, including strategies that allow gang members to leave gangs

    The lieutenant selected as the Officer in Charge (OIC) of the Gang Unit had previously served as the OIC of our Juvenile Unit and has had extensive experience working with our schools, courts, Division of Youth Services (DYS), and others. The officers selected for this unit are highly motivated individuals with established records of problem solving in their previous assignments.
