From: Lieut. Dave Brown Date: November 2, 2007 Subject: Underage Alcohol Compliance Operation
The Lynn Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit, (SIU) in conjunction with the Lynn Licensing Board, Girls Inc. and Mothers Against Drunk Driving, (MADD) is announcing that random underage alcohol compliance operations will be conducted. These efforts are to insure that no underage persons purchase alcohol. The operation will be performed under the guidelines prescribed by the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission and State Law. The operations will begin sometime in November, and may continue through the holiday season. The purpose and goal of these underage compliance operations is to raise awareness and conformity to the laws, and regulations that govern the sale of alcoholic beverages. The operations may include visits to bars, clubs, restaurants and package stores throughout the city. Voluntary compliance of the alcohol laws is preferred. However, due to the potentially devastating results which could occur otherwise, enforcement is imperative. As stated by Sgt. Rick Carrow, the supervisor of the Special Investigations Unit, “Tragic accidents can occur when you mix alcohol and underage persons. It is necessary to educate, and raise the awareness of the license holders, in order to prevent such tragedies.” Establishments which do not comply are revisited by the officers, and informed about the operation. Additionally, reports of non-compliance are forwarded to the local licensing board, and to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission for review. During the last operation, Champions, located at 170 Broad Street, was found in non-compliance.
