From: Lieut. Dave Brown Date: October 25, 2007 Subject: Dog Seized by Animal Control Officer
On October 17, 2007, at approximately 4:50 P.M., Lynn Police responded to the area of 407 Lynnfield Street on a report of a dog attack. Upon their arrival, they learned the victim Julie Potter, age 36, was jogging on the sidewalk, when a large black dog escaped from its leash. The animal, a lab pit-bull mix, knocked her to the ground, and bit her several times. As she struggled to get the dog off of her, she rolled out onto Lynnfield Street. A passing motorist Dolores DiFillipo stopped, and yelled for Potter to get into her vehicle. She was able to fight the dog off, and enter the car. Potter was taken to Union Hospital, and treated for injuries to her arms and legs. Animal Control Officer Kevin Farnsworth conducted an investigation into the incident, and a recommendation was made that the animal be destroyed. Lynn Police Deputy Chief, Kevin Coppinger, immediately authorized the order for the dog to be euthanized. On October 24, 2007, at approximately 5:50 P.M., Animal Control Officer Kevin Farnsworth, and Lynn Police responded to 407 Lynnfield Street to serve the order, and take custody of the dog. The owner, Robin Edwards, surrendered the animal to Kevin Farnsworth. He subsequently transported the dog to the North Shore Animal Hospital. There it will remain for a period of ten days, pending the possibility of an appeal by the owner, in the Lynn District Court. It cannot be emphasized enough! Dog owners need to ensure that their pets are properly secured! Whether or not the animal’s nature is docile or aggressive should not be a determining factor. Often is the case after a dog bite, when the owner claims that this was the first such occurrence.
