Subject: 2009 Medal of Honor, Commendations, and Awards

 

        On Saturday, October 3, 2009, the Lynn Police Relief Association celebrated its 128th Annual Ball at the Sheraton Ferncroft Hotel in Danvers.  

        There were thirteen Department Commendations awarded to officers who were involved in hazardous incidents and situations such as active shooting situations, armed robberies in progress, an attempted kidnapping, and the seizure of numerous firearms and narcotics.

Officer Robert Avery and Officer Kenneth Avery (retired)
 

        Officer Robert Avery received three department commendations and was honored as the recipient of the 2009 Medal of Honor.  The award was presented by Officer Avery’s father, retired Lynn Police Officer, Kenneth Avery, who was also a Medal of Honor recipient in 1986.  This presentation marked the first time in the history of the Lynn Police Department that the Medal of Honor has been awarded to both father and son.

        Sergeant Henry Wojewodzic, Officers John Bernard, Ralph Sirois and John Votour Distinguished Service Awards for their involvement in apprehending armed and dangerous individuals both on and off duty.

        Officer Masrob Torosian was recognized with a Military Service Award for his service to his country with the United States Marine Corp during his recent deployment to Africa.

        Nicole Hanlon, a student at the College of the Holy Cross and the daughter of Lt. Marie Hanlon and Mr. Daniel Hanlon received the 2009 Lynn Police Relief Association Scholarship Award

        Mr. Walter A. Cuffe Jr. of the Cuffe McGinn Funeral Home and Mr. Mark Kennard of Project Cope each received Community Service Awards for their work with the Lynn Police Department and the city of Lynn.
