From: Lieutenant Christopher Kelly Date: August 26, 2011 Subject: Fatal Motor Vehicle Accident
On August 26, 2011 at 0050 hours the Lynn Police responded to a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Western Avenue and Chatham Street. The arriving Officers quickly radioed for the assistance of the Lynn Fire Department and their “jaws of life.” There was a male and female trapped inside a 1994 Honda Accord. Lynn Police and Lynn Fire extracted two individuals form the Honda Accord. The male was transported to Salem Hospital and the female was transported to Mass General Hospital. The male was later pronounced deceased at Salem Hospital. The female remains in critical condition in Boston. The names of the victims are not being released at this time, pending notification to their next of kin. The operator of the second vehicle, Gilbert Figueroa (09-24-64), was transported to Union Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. He was subsequently placed into custody for O.U.I. Homicide. He will be arraigned in Lynn District court today. The Lynn Police Traffic Unit and the State Police Reconstruction Team are continuing the investigation. The suspect’s vehicle, a 2011 Nissan Sentra, was traveling southbound on Western Avenue and the victim’s vehicle was traveling eastbound on Chatham Street. The victim’s vehicle was pushed into a third unoccupied vehicle on Western Avenue.
