Subject:            Shooting Arrests

 

On Monday, July 16, 2007, at approximately 9:30 P.M., Lynn Police responded to the area of Western Avenue and Franklin Street, on a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located two gun shot victims, Javan Close, age 23, of 45 Kenwood Terrace in Lynn and John Close III, age 24, of 92 Hamilton Avenue in Lynn. They were treated at the scene by Lynn Fire, and transported to Massachusetts General Hospital. Their injuries were considered to be life-threatening. Upon securing the scene, Lynn Police discovered two handguns, and a shotgun, discarded nearby. Furthermore, the initial investigation revealed that the shooting suspect was a large black male, who fled the area.

Over the past several days, Sergeant Michael Vail supervisor of the Lynn Police Department’s Gang Unit, and his detectives have been diligently piecing together the circumstances surrounding the shooting. They were assisted by officers assigned to the Lynn Police Patrol Division, detectives assigned to the Lynn Police Criminal Investigation Division, the Essex County Drug Task Force and State Police Detectives assigned to D.A. Jonathan Blodgett’s Office.    

 As a result of the Gang Unit’s investigation, warrants were sought out of Lynn District Court for the arrest of John Close III, for weapons related charges pertaining to the incident. On Thursday, July 19, 2007, John Close III, was taken into custody for Lynn District Court default warrants, in addition to the warrants related to the shooting incident. Javan Close, who remains hospitalized, will face similar charges.  

 

John Close III was charged with:

 

Lynn District Court Default Warrant

A&B with a Dangerous Weapon

 

Lynn District Court Default Warrant

Felony B&E Nighttime

A&B with a Dangerous Weapon

Unarmed Robbery

A&B on a Person over 60

Malicious Destruction of Property Over 250

Armed Burglary
 

Lynn District Court Warrant - (Charges related to the shooting incident)

Carrying a Firearm without a License

Firearm used in Commission of a Felony (subsequent offense)

Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (subsequent offense)

 

            During the course of their investigation, Gang Unit Detectives identified Oneis Phillips as the alleged shooter. On Friday, July 20, 2007, at approximately 2:00 P.M., Oneis Phillips, age 26, of 32 Shepard Street in Lynn was taken into custody by police, and charged with:

 

            Lynn District Court Warrant

            Armed Assault to Murder (two counts)

            Carrying a Loaded Firearm

            Carrying a Firearm without a License

            Discharging a Firearm Within 500 Feet of a Dwelling

 

            The Lynn Police Gang Unit and all who assisted with this investigation did an outstanding job! They meticulously sorted through the details of this chaotic incident, and as a result of their efforts, those involved will be brought to justice.
