Subject:           Dog Attack - 8 Grover Street

On Friday, June 29, 2007, at approximately 9:52 A.M., Lynn Police received a 911 call from a young child who reported a fight between another brother and sister at 8 Grover Street. Upon the arrival of Officers Jack Marr and Ralph Sirois, they could hear yelling and screaming coming from within the home. The officers entered the open side door leading into the kitchen, where they observed the teenage brother and sister fighting. Two other children were also located in the home.

As the officers separate the juveniles, the family dog, a pit bull, latched onto the left arm of the female, and began to thrash her about. Officer Sirois immediately attempted to disengage the animal by spraying the dog in the face, with his department issued pepper spray. When this attempt had no effect on the dog, Officer Sirois struck the animal in the back and shoulder area, with his department issued baton. The dog then released the girl, and focused its attention on the officer.

The officer attempted to created distance by backing out of the kitchen door, into the side yard. The dog followed, and in order to avoid being attacked, Officer Ralph Sirois was force to fire two rounds at the animal. The dog became stunned and ran off. Animal Control Officer, Kevin Farnsworth arrived on scene and he took custody of the pit bull, with the assistance of Officer Jack Marr. The dog was subsequently transported to North Shore Animal Hospital to be treated for its injuries. The dog survived, and will be quarantined for a period of ten days, while officials determine its fate.

The juvenile female age 15, was transported to North Shore Children’s Hospital, to be treated for multiple dog bites to her left arm and back area. Her injuries were considered non-life threatening. The officers did a remarkable job of preventing the dog from causing even more serious injuries to the young girl.

During the commotion, the juvenile male age 14, ran into the living room of the home. When officers attempted to take him into custody for (D.B.R.O.) Delinquency by Reason of, Domestic Assault and Battery on his sister, he resisted their attempts to do so. He allegedly began to kick his legs at one of the officers while lying on the couch. He was additionally charged with (D.B.R.O.) Delinquency by Reason of, Resisting Arrest, A&B on a Police Officer and Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (to wit dog) It was also alleged that during the commotion, the male juvenile instructed the dog to attack Officer Sirois. The mother of the children arrived home after the incident, and was informed of the events. The Department of Social Services was also informed.
