Subject: Report of Credit Card Fraud using Lynn Police on Caller Identification

The Lynn Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division has received reports of a credit card scam involving the use of the caller identification as the Lynn Police. The victim reported she answered her telephone and the name “Lynn Police” was the caller on her caller identification. She stated the voice was an automated female attempting to get credit card information during the call. The victim was prompted to enter her personal credit card information during the automated call.

The Lynn Police Department does not use automated calling, unless an emergency broadcast would be given out to the community. There would be no individual automated calls from the Lynn Police Department. The Lynn Police Department would not seek personal credit card information unless there was an on-going investigation regarding a previous complaint.

The Lynn Police Department has learned that there are websites utilized to disguise and even change the name on the incoming caller identification. The Lynn Police Department would urge people to ask for a call back number and call the number back to verify who is actually calling. People should never give their personal information to an unknown caller. If anyone has any information regarding a similar call, they are encouraged to contact the Lynn Police Department at (781) 595-2000 or they can text a tip to Lynn Police at (tiplynn and then the information to tip411).
