From: Lieut. Dave Brown Date: June 5, 2007 Subject: Underage Alcohol Compliance Operation
The Lynn Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit, (SIU) in conjunction with the Lynn Licensing Board, has announced that it will be conducting random underage alcohol compliance operations, to insure no underage persons purchase alcohol. The operation will be conducted under the guidelines prescribed by the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission and State Law. The operations will begin in June, and may well continue through the summer, including the Fourth of July weekend. The purpose and goal of these underage compliance operations is to raise awareness and conformity to the laws, and regulations that govern the sale of alcoholic beverages. The operations may include visits to bars, clubs, restaurants and package stores throughout the city. It is our belief that a greater percentage of compliance will enhance public safety. “Often unfortunate and tragic accidents occur when you mix alcohol and underage persons,” said Sgt. Rick Carrow supervisor of the Special Investigations Unit. “We want to educate and raise the awareness of the license holders in order to prevent such tragedies.” The results of the last compliance operation were promising. A 97.5% compliance ratio was achieved. Investigators visited 36 establishments, and only one, Lynnway Liquors, located at 702 Lynnway, failed to comply. Establishments which do not comply are revisited by the officers, and educated about the operation. Additionally, reports of non-compliance are forwarded to the local licensing board, and to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission for review.
