From: Lieut. Dave Brown Date: May 16, 2007 Subject: Window Screens
On Tuesday, May 15, 2007, Lynn Police and Lynn Fire responded to 537 Essex Street on a report that a young child fell out of an open window. Upon their arrival, emergency personnel discovered that a six-year old boy fell, 15 to 20 feet from his bedroom window. At the time, the child was sitting on the window sill, and leaned back against the window screen. The screen could not support his body weight. He was subsequently transported to North Shore Children’s Hospital, and treated for his injuries. Fortunately they were not serious. Each year during the start of the warmer weather it is not unusual to see these types of accidents involving young children. When the weather gets hot we look for instant relief, and the dangers of an open window and children don’t typically come to mind. Although most window screens have a warning label, our busy schedules may not allow us the time to stop and read these warnings. Therefore, we would like to take this opportunity to remind parents and guardians of the dangers of open windows and young children. Screens are not made to support the body weight of young children or pets for that matter. We encourage you to take the necessary precautions and remove couches, beds, chairs and anything that children can climb on, from near windows. These preventative measures could save a child’s life.
