On Tuesday, May 01, 2007, at approximately 10:35 A.M., Animal Control Officer Kevin Farnsworth was traveling in the area of 321 Parkland Avenue. He observed a male party lying down in the street near a dump truck. This individual appeared to have suffered a serious head injury. Farnsworth who is assigned a police radio, called into the police station for assistance. Lynn Police and Lynn Fire were quickly on scene, and Parkland Avenue was shut down to traffic in both directions. The victim was subsequently transported to Massachusetts General Hospital via ambulance. His name was not immediately released pending notification to family members. The initial investigation suggested that he may have fallen off the dump truck, onto the street. At the time, he was working at a construction site located next to 321 Parkland Avenue. Captain Joseph Rowe III, supervisor of the Lynn Police Criminal Investigation Division arrived on scene, along with detectives assigned to his unit. They conducted an investigation into the incident, which is ongoing. A representative from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration also responded. The victim is Richard Courtney Jr., age 46, of Lynn. Courtney is also a twelve-year veteran Lynn Police Officer. At the time of the accident, he was off-duty. He is currently listed in critical condition.
