INVESTIGATION INTO LYNN SHOOTING REMAINS ONGOING

On March 16 at approximately 9:00 p.m. Lynn Police responded to 27 Woodman Street on a report of a serious domestic incident.  Upon arrival, officers learned that the suspect, Robert Mangiafico, 37, of that address, had fled the scene and was armed with a handgun.

A short time later police located him on foot in the area of Center Street.  A brief foot chase ensued and officers found him in a driveway on Tacoma Street.

The man displayed a handgun and threatened to harm himself.  Lynn Police secured the area and evacuated homes in the immediate vicinity.  Lynn Police attempted for the next two hours to negotiate with the man to try to get him to put down the weapon.

At the request of Lynn Police, the State Police STOP Team arrived on scene at approximately 11:30 p.m., and for the next 5 ½ hours attempted to negotiate with the man, and utilized several non-lethal  techniques to try to resolve the situation peacefully.  During that time he made several threatening gestures toward police.

At 5:07 a.m. shots were fired.  The man was transported to Lynn Union Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:30 a.m.

An autopsy will be conducted tomorrow at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Boston.  The investigation into this matter remains ongoing.
