From: Lieut. Dave Brown Date: January 16, 2008 Subject: Parking Conditions
So far this year, we have had three significant snowstorms, and we are only into the middle of January. The record setting snowfall amounts have exacerbated parking and traffic flow conditions. After a storm, as snow banks pile up, streets generally become narrower. Multiple snowstorms compound this problem. Those who typically park their vehicles on the street are forced to park further away from the curb. This can create difficulties for passing vehicles and pedestrians. For the most part, people are cognizant of these traffic problems, and ensure that their vehicles are not impeding the free flow. However, from time to time, there are others who contribute to the problems. Sometimes, when vehicles are parked opposite of each other, on a narrow side street, this makes it impossible to pass. When parking a vehicle during and after inclement weather, please consider whether fire apparatus or an ambulance, can safely pass by. If they cannot, and access to a street is restricted, someone’s life could be endangered. For example, if someone needed medical attention, or if there was a fire, emergency personnel could lose valuable time, dealing with an impassable street. In order to prevent this from occurring, the Police and Parking Departments may be forced to ticket and tow vehicles that have the potential of creating a hazardous situation. We would prefer voluntary compliance, and request that you keep our concerns in mind, when parking during this winter season.
